As events unfold, the Doctor discovers a sinister alien intent on altering the future of mankind and the alien in question is a Sontaran. FACTS ~ DOCTOR: The Third Doctor COMPANIONS: Sarah Jane Smith ENEMIES & ALIENS: Linx (a Sontaran). SPACE & TIME: Space: England, 13th Century DID YOU KNOW? ~ This is the first story to feature the Sontarans (or rather a Sontaran). They were never intended to be a returning villain but the design and makeup of them was very popular. This story also introduces Sarah Jane Smith, one of Doctor Who’s most popular companions. She would be a companion to the 3rd, 4th, 10th and 11th Doctors.  This is the first story to finally name the planet of the Time Lords as Gallifrey! Terrance Dicks gave Robert Holmes the job of writing a story set in a medeaval castle. Holmes found this so difficult that he got his own back a few years later by giving Dicks the job of writing a story set in a lighthouse (The Horror of Fang Rock, which featured the Rutans, the Sontarans nemesis). Can I have this illustration on a shirt?  This quote represents the essence of what makes Doctor Who the show it is. Sure, the writers could resolve the greater plot arcs more concisely, without the side-quests and vacations in Paris or on Andromeda. The TARDIS could take the Doctor where he wants to go every single time, without its habit of turning up places it “shouldn’t”. The Doctor could want to go only to the places that he had to, without bothering with companions or interspecies wars. But why not? Because it’s more interesting that way, that’s why. Also, the illustration is gorgeous beyond words.
